Former FC Salzburg attacker Alan and Everton FC forward Romelu Lukaku have finished as the eight-goal joint-top scorers in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League, the second season running the Austrian champions have received the honour.

Last term Jonathan Soriano managed eight goals in the competition proper to take the accolade, and the Salzburg man was joint fourth this time with six goals. But two ahead of the Spaniard were both Lukaku – seven of whose strikes came in Everton's knockout-phase campaign – and Alan, whose haul arrived from just five group matches before his winter switch to China's Guangzhou Evergrande FC.

The only serious threat to Alan and Lukaku's lead before tonight's final was from Carlos Bacca, who needed a hat-trick for Sevilla in Warsaw to equal their tally and indeed move joint fourth in the all-time UEFA Europa League reckoning; in the event, he managed only two goals in Warsaw. The overall list is headed by Radamel Falcao, who hit a record 17 goals in FC Porto's 2010/11 win and also triumphed with Club Atlético de Madrid, though his career total of 31 including qualifying is nine short of Henrik Larsson's 40 if the UEFA Cup is also included.
