Former Italy forward Roberto Mancini has been named FC Internazionale Milano coach for a second time. His appointment follows today's departure of Walter Mazzarri after a disappointing start to the 2014/15 Serie A campaign for the UEFA Europa League contenders.

Mancini, 49 – who won three successive Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies and an Italian Super Cup during his four-year reign at Inter between 2004 and 2008 – has signed a deal until June 2017.

"Our aim is to be part of the European elite again and this is the reason why I am happy to welcome back Roberto Mancini," said club president Erick Thohir. "His track record with Inter, but also with the other clubs he coached, speaks for itself. His international experience and hunger for success will take the club to a new level."

Mancini left Inter in 2008 to be replaced by José Mourinho. He went on to manage Manchester City FC (2009–13) and Galatasaray AŞ (2013–14), winning the Premier League championship and FA Cup with City and the Turkish Cup with the Istanbul outfit.

Mazzarri took charge of Inter in summer 2013 and led the Milan-based side to fifth place last term, earning a UEFA Europa League play-off berth. The Nerazzurri currently top UEFA Europa League Group F unbeaten, but the 53-year-old tactician garnered just four victories and 16 points from 11 matches in Serie A where Inter lie ninth.

"FC Internazionale would like to announce that Walter Mazzarri has been relieved of his duties as coach," read an official club statement earlier today. "The club would like to thank Mazzarri for the commitment, dedication and professionalism he showed over his 17 months in charge."

Mancini's first game back in the dugout will be the 'away' derby against AC Milan on 23 November.
