ACF Fiorentina forward Giuseppe Rossi is expected to miss the entire UEFA Europa League group stage after suffering the latest in a long series of knee injuries.

The Viola announced that Rossi will be sidelined for "four to five months" after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee. It is the 27-year-old's fourth operation on that knee since 2011.

The Italian international tore his right anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Villarreal CF in October 2011, returning to action in May 2013 after joining Fiorentina. He started last season with the Serie A outfit by scoring 14 goals in 17 games before damaging his medial collateral ligament in January.

Rossi was named in Italy's provisional 30-man squad for the FIFA World Cup but failed to make the cut because of doubts over his fitness. Fiorentina begin their Group K campaign on 18 September when they host EA Guingamp.
