Skipper Maxime Gonalons acknowledged that Olympique Lyonnais' display was far from perfect despite the 1-0 Group I win against Real Betis Balompié that ensured the French club's progress to the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League. Visiting goalkeeper Stephan Andersen also admitted there was room to improve though Vitória SC's draw with HNK Rijeka meant that Betis joined Lyon in the next round.
Maxime Gonalons, Lyon midfielder
We all hoped before the game that we'd clinch qualification. That's the main piece of good news of the evening. We now have to go to Guimaraes to try and claim first place. We had difficulty imposing our rhythm on the game in the first half – we gave away possession a lot. The more the match went on, the better we felt. We stayed solid right until the end.
Samuel Umtiti, Lyon defender
We knew it would be tough. There were quite a lot of mistakes in the first half. We were better in the second and the most important thing is the win, which also means we qualified. We didn't concede and we're going to try and do better in our upcoming games in terms of our performance.
Stephan Andersen, Betis goalkeeper
We knew before the game that we might just need a point or not even that to go through. Unfortunately for us we lost today, but the result went for us in the other game. We were lucky.
We had some trouble getting through. We created chances on the counterattack. We knew that Lyon are a good team and that they'd cause us problems, though I think we did quite a good job in defence. They had some chances, but we did quite well until they scored.
We should be good in both the Spanish Liga and Europe. We go into every game to win it. We've had a bad run in the league, and hopefully we'll turn that around this weekend. I don't think this result will do us any harm.
I'm always happy to play. I think today I had a good game. It would have been nice to keep a clean sheet, but I think when I look back at the game tomorrow I'll be satisfied with myself.
