An overwhelming feeling of another opportunity spurned was the collective reaction of the SC Freiburg players after they were pegged back at home by Estoril Praia. The UEFA Europa League matchday three meeting left both teams off the pace in Group H, although it was Estoril's first point and captain Vagner said his side did well to gain a draw considering they fell behind.
Immanuel Höhn, Freiburg defender
We are a bit disappointed that we didn't pick up the three points. We have worked a lot and played good football but in the end it wasn't enough for victory.
Sometimes we didn't get that piece of luck maybe needed to score the second and that's the reason we only have one point at the end. We will not travel to Estoril to lose – we will give it our best, we will fight, and maybe that'll enough for three points: that would be the best outcome, of course.
Julian Schuster, Freiburg midfielder
I think we started well and in the first half we were dominant – we had clear chances even after making it 1-0, but in the second half we lost the control of the game. Estoril scored their goal with their first chance, but even after that we had some big opportunities to win. However, it was not to be – we missed them – and in the end we only have one point to show for it.
You could see how much quality [Vladimír Darida] brings to the team – he can take us to another level. We have to see how fast he can reach peak match fitness over 90 minutes. Once he does, he will be a big plus for us.
Of course we want to win in Estoril. Anything is possible, and if we do win there we will try to make best use of the chance we've given ourselves. We will go there, give our best and try to win.
Vagner, Estoril goalkeeper
With the attacking options Freiburg have, we knew it was going to be very difficult to play here and, considering the circumstances of the game, where we started losing, it ends up being a good result.
It was a busy game for me, we didn't start well. We should have been stronger, but in the second half we managed to even things up. That was important, because we started to have more possession, which led to the equaliser. Maybe, with more time, we could have won, which was our objective.
[The return] is going to be a tricky match, much like this one, where both teams need to win. After this, we now know a little more about Freiburg, so it's going to be a good match, and perhaps we can win at home.
