Zoran Mamić has replaced Branko Ivanković after he was dismissed as GNK Dinamo Zagreb coach.
Ivanković took over from Krunoslav Jurčić for a third spell in charge on 2 September but after four losses in his eight games at the helm, including both UEFA Europa League Group B fixtures and Saturday's 1-0 Croatian First League defeat at RNK Split, Dinamo opted to appoint sporting director Mamić for the rest of 2013.
Mamić, 42, was previously caretaker in August, overseeing a 3-2 UEFA Champions League play-off second-leg win at FK Austria Wien – though that was not enough to overturn a 2-0 home reverse – as well as a 3-1 league victory over NK Istra 1961.
A club statement said: "Zoran Mamić will be in charge of the team until the winter break, with assistants Damir Krznar and Igor Cvitanović." His side welcome PSV Eindhoven on Thursday.
