A UEFA Cup winner as a player with PSV Eindhoven (1978) and as a coach with FC Schalke 04 (1997), Huub Stevens is looking to get his hands on the trophy for a third time as he leads PAOK FC in UEFA Europa League Group L.
"Well, it was the adventure that attracted me," the 59-year-old Dutchman told UEFA.com as he explained his decision to come to Greece in June. "I've worked in the Netherlands for many years, also in Germany, so I was looking for an adventure. I wanted to know what it was like in the south of Europe. So when PAOK showed interest, I liked the idea of doing it and that's how it came about."
As his side head back to Stevens's home country to take on AZ Alkmaar this week, PAOK captain Kostas Katsouranis is sure the coach is making a difference in Salonika. "He is a Dutch manager with vast experience, and he tries to convey that experience to the team," the midfielder said. "He wants discipline in the team, and now he is trying to make every one of us believe in ourselves. He has said that everyone will have a chance to prove himself, and that every player is crucial for the success of the team."
