UEFA Europa League contenders IF Elfsborg have decided to replace coach Jörgen Lennartsson, with former Sweden midfielder Klas Ingesson taking temporary charge.
The 48-year-old Lennartsson assumed the helm of the Boras side in 2011 and led them to the domestic title last season, but this term has been something of a disappointment at home. With four games remaining in the Swedish Allsvenskan, Elfsborg are sixth, 12 points adrift of leaders Malmö FF.
"Jörgen has done a fantastic job as coach, including bringing Elfsborg their sixth championship in 2012," said the club's chairman Bosse Johansson. "I would like to stress that this is a proactive change of coach in anticipation of new challenges in 2014. We are making the change now to give the team plenty of time to prepare for next season."
Youth coach Ingesson has been tasked with overseeing first-team affairs for the remainder of 2013. The 45-year-old has plenty of experience from his playing days, having represented sides in Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, England, Italy and France, though his coaching career has been interrupted by an ongoing battle with cancer.
He will direct the team for the first time when they host R. Standard de Liège in UEFA Europa League Group C on Thursday. Elfsborg lost 4-0 at FC Salzburg on matchday one.
