Swansea City AFC forward Michu acknowledged fortune had played its part in their stunning 3-0 defeat of Valencia FC, but preferred to enjoy the fruits of their labour. Adil Rami's early red card turned the tide in favour of the visitors, who took the lead through Wilfried Bony, before second half-strikes from Michu and Jonathan De Guzmán settled the Group A match. "We always try to play good football regardless of the opponent," said Michu, who reserved special praise for strike partner Bony. Meanwhile, Valenica midfielder Sergio Canales lamented his team's approach after going down to ten men.
Sergio Canales, Valencia midfielder
All the players are very disappointed. We aren't playing well at the moment and we need something to lift our spirits. The coach didn't say anything to us, which is not surprising after a defeat like that. The Rami red card hurt us. We are Valenica and we go out to win every game, although we must adapt when going down to ten men. We knew they would want to dominate possession and they played their best football after the sending off.
Javi Fuego, Valencia midfielder
We were aware of the importance of this match. We started well, with real intensity. Ramis' sending off turned the game in Swansea's favour and they were able to play some good football. With ten men, Swansea were able to dominate and were better than us. Now we must be professionals and come together as a group. Everyone must share responsibility.
José Cañas, Swansea midfielder
We played well and it was a comfortable win. They found it very difficult after Rami was sent off. Last year, Swansea's style was the same, with the emphasis on keeping the ball. We imposed our style on the game and the result is very pleasing. It's great to get our first three points and now it's a case of taking it game by game.
Michu, Swansea forward
The sending off was a turning point and we quickly scored. We had been nervous up until then. To come to a difficult stadium like this and leave with a clean sheet is a great effort from the team. To score three goals also gives us great pleasure. We deserved to win although the red card helped us. We always try to play good football regardless of the opponent. [Bony] is a great player. He will score lots of goals this season. To score at Mestalla and win the game is a great feeling.
