It was a profitable night for Luxembourg's leading lights as both AS Jeunesse Esch and FC Differdange 03 did enough to make it through to the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round. Montenegro's FK Rudar Pljevlja also progressed thanks to a draw at FC Mika.
A tie with AUK Broughton FC or FK Ventspils awaits Jeunesse Esch after a crucial goal from Chu Wang ten minutes from time meant they advanced despite a 2-1 loss at TPS Turku. The visitors' 2-0 home success achieved last week in Esch-sur-Alzette seemed under threat when Alexandre Vitali turned the ball into his own net on 38 minutes. There was a let-off when TPS's Wayne Brown failed to convert from the spot and Wang then made the hosts pay by scoring to seal Daniel Theis's men a place in the next round. Although Roope Riski struck a late winner on the night, it was not enough for TPS.
The side that lost the Luxembourger Cup final to Jeunesse Esch last season, Differdange, also marched on after ending the hopes of Albania's KF Laçi. Maurice Spitoni's side, who made it to the play-off stage in 2011/12 only to be defeated by Paris Saint-German FC, followed up their 1-0 away success last week with a 2-1 win at the Stade Municipal de Differdange. Omar Er Rafik hit a second-half double to deny a Laçi side who started brightly with Valdan Nimani's goal but finished the tie with three men sent off – Henry Ndreka, Erjon Vucaj and Taulant Sefgjini. A tough-looking tie with Dutch side FC Utrecht is Differdange's reward.
Rudar Pljevlja are in the second qualifying round for the second time in three seasons, after a 1-1 draw in Armenia sealed their 2-1 aggregate success. Nenad Stojanović's 85th-minute goal secured their passage following Rafayel Ghazaryan's opener for Mika. Poland's WKS Śląsk Wrocław await the Montenegrin side in the next round.
Linfield FC take on ÍF Fuglafjørdur tomorrow evening, with the remaining 34 ties of the round to conclude on Thursday.
