2011/12 in Europe: The realisation of a dream. Chelsea's obituary was pencilled time and again: as they approached their last group game needing to beat Valencia CF, when they lost 3-1 to SSC Napoli in the last 16, after being paired with FC Barcelona in the semis. The Blues battled on and, under stand-in boss Roberto di Matteo, upset the odds again in the final, beating FC Bayern München on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
The season so far: Those Munich heroics seemed a distant memory as Chelsea laboured in their defence, edged out at the first hurdle after a three-way tussle with Juventus and FC Shakhtar Donetsk. Di Matteo also exited, making way for Rafael Benítez. The Blues' bid to become the first British side to complete a clean sweep of the three major UEFA club cups had a testing start, with narrow triumphs over AC Sparta Praha and FC Steaua Bucureşti.
One to watch: Eden Hazard has not had it all his own way in his first season at Stamford Bridge, but in recent weeks he has rediscovered the form that brought him the sobriquet 'Little Messi' (in age rather than height). Frank Lampard said: "Eden has got the world at his feet and he can handle the pressure because he is that good."
