VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach gained some revenge for conceding first place in UEFA Europa League Group C to Fenerbahçe SK with victory in a rainy Istanbul.

Both sides were confirmed in the round of 32 prior to this matchday six encounter with Fenerbahçe certain of top spot and seeding in the 20 December draw. However the Turkish club's unbeaten record was ended by first-half goals from Tolga Cigerci and Mike Hanke and a clincher by second-half substitute Luuk de Jong.

Fenerbahçe were nearly ahead early on when Selçuk Şahin forced goalkeeper Christofer Heimeroth to tip over. But on 23 minutes the visitors took the lead thanks to a superb curling effort from German-born Turkish midfielder Cigerci from the edge of the box, his maiden first-team goal.

Five minutes later it was 2-0. Henri Bienvenu brought down Branimir Hrgota and Hanke dispatched his penalty into the roof of the net. The home side had the better of the last hour but the third goal went to Mönchengladbach as De Jong, who had also scored in their 4-2 home loss to Fenerbahçe, came off the bench for Hanke on his injury comeback to strike following good work by fellow substitute Amin Younes.
