Points and positives shared in Bruges

The focus fell on finding positives for both Club Brugge KV and Newcastle United FC after the two sides contested an entertaining 2-2 draw at Jan Breydelstadion. Home side captain Carl Hoefkens was particularly pleased with his team's "brilliant reaction" after Newcastle had levelled the scores, while the English outfit now feel themselves a step closer to the round of 32. "We have a great chance," said Sammy Ameobi, provider of brother Shola's leveller.

We got off to a great start and went 2-0 up. Then they scored a magnificent, unbelievable goal, which gave them confidence. They scored again, but we reacted brilliantly: we put pressure on them and threw everything we could at them. Unfortunately they have quality too, as everyone knows, but I think we deserved three points. We were really fired up and we had something to prove after losing four straight games. I absolutely think we did that. Our objective was to play with passion and commitment ‒ unfortunately it wasn't enough.

I'm very happy with my goal for the team, but also for myself as it's great for my confidence. It was also a fantastic pass from Ryan Donk that put me through. The most important thing now is that we have a chance. We will try to win our remaining two games and progress.

We played very well tonight, to be honest, and I think we definitely could have won this game. [Vurnon Anita's goal] was fantastic. That's why people come to the stadiums, to see goals like that. We didn't start well tonight, but we put it right for our fans. We were a good attacking force after conceding a couple of goals, and I'm happy about that.

We were really disappointed to go 2-0 down, but if we win our next game, we're through. Both sets of fans were raring to go, and this really helped the players fly off the blocks. At half-time we thought: "We're going to win this." But ultimately we are happy with a point. We are looking forward to our next game, on home turf, and I'm proud for the fans who came over.

I really enjoyed the game tonight and starting alongside my brother. I'm glad I got to contribute to his goal. I turned inside and put him through with my right foot and he prodded it in beyond the keeper. Vurnon's strike showed his great ability. We have such great fans, supporting us through thick and thin. They gave us great encouragement tonight so I'm glad we got a point. I'm really hoping we progress for them ‒ we have a great chance.
