FC Girondins de Bordeaux tightened their grip on second place in UEFA Europa League Group D after a 1-1 draw with CS Marítimo.

Beaten 3-0 by Newcastle United FC last time out, Francis Gillot's charges were aiming to end a run of three European away games without a win when Yoan Gouffran opened the scoring after 30 minutes. They could not maintain their lead, though, as Valentin Roberge's quick-fire reply earned Marítimo – who remain bottom of the section – a share of the spoils.

Both sides initially pressurised their opponents high up the pitch, trading blows, although it was Bordeaux who were landing marginally more of them. Midfielder Ludovic Obraniak went particularly close to scoring, and perhaps should have when he planted a free header straight at goalkeeper Romain Salin from close range. The Polish international sought to make amends immediately, traversing the face of the Marítimo area before firing a venomous shot over.

The Ligue 1 team were rewarded with the goal their possession merited on the half-hour mark. Full-back Benoît Trémoulinas was the catalyst, raiding down the left before his sweeping cross was turned in by the predatory Gouffran. The hosts took just six minutes to reply, however, Roberge looping in the rebound after Rúben Ferreira's thunderous effort had come back off the crossbar.

Bordeaux wrestled back the initiative after the break and almost restored their lead when Gouffran pulled Nicolas Maurice-Belay's centre wide. In the blink of an eye, Rafael Miranda's exquisite flick from Ferreira's cute corner was hacked off the line by Mariano.

The action proceeded to switch ends at a dizzying pace, both teams relentless in their surge for three points. It was the hosts who looked the more likely to get them, though, with Danilo Dias stabbing into the side netting from close range and Sami's teasing cross evading the outstretched leg of substitute David Simão.
