Vercauteren succeeds Sá Pinto at Sporting

One day before their trip to Frank Vercauteren's former club KRC Genk, the 55-year-old has been appointed as Sporting Clube de Portugal's coach for the rest of the season.

Sporting Clube de Portugal have confirmed the appointment of Frank Vercauteren as coach the day before the Lisbon team visit his former employers KRC Genk.

Vercauteren, 55, takes the place of Oceano Cruz, called in on an interim basis following Ricardo Sá Pinto's dismissal earlier this month. Sá Pinto left the José Alvalade hot seat following a surprise 3-0 Group G defeat by Videoton FC in Hungary on UEFA Europa League matchday two.

Vercauteren will officially take the reins from Tuesday and has signed a contract until the end of June. A UEFA Cup winner as a player with RSC Anderlecht in 1983, Vercauteren guided Genk to the Belgian title in 2010/11. Sporting, who lie bottom of Group G as well as 12th in the Portuguese First Division, visit Genk on Thursday.

The former Belgium coach, who also won the Belgian championship at the Anderlecht helm in 2005/06, has been without a job since leaving al-Jazira Club in the United Arab Emirates earlier this year.
