Marítimo test for bruised Club Brugge

Group stage debutants CS Marítimo boast an unbeaten record in European competition this season, and are likely to provide a formidable obstacle to Club Brugge KV's hopes of easing the pain of their demoralising matchday one defeat.

Previous meetings
• The sides are meeting for the first time in UEFA competition.

• Club Brugge's six European games against Portuguese sides have ended W3 D1 L2 (W2 D1 L0 at home – W1 D0 L2 in Portugal). Most recently, they won 2-1 away and drew 1-1 at home against SC Braga in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League group stage.

• Marítimo's only previous encounter with a Belgian side came in the 1993/94 UEFA Cup, where they lost 2-0 at R. Antwerp FC, bowing out of the first round following a 2-2 draw at home.

Match background
• Club Brugge's 4-1 victory against Debreceni VSC in the play-offs ended a four-game stretch without a European home win, which included three defeats. They have won only one home game in their last two group stage campaigns.

• This is Club Brugge's seventh tilt at this group stage – and their fifth in succession – but they have only twice made it through, in 2009/10 and last season.

• Marítimo are unbeaten in five European games this season – three draws and two wins – and are engaged in their maiden UEFA group stage campaign, having fallen at the final hurdle before this phase of the competition on three previous occasions.

• They have not conceded in four European games since a 1-1 draw at Asteras Tripolis FC in the third qualifying round.

Team facts
• Club Brugge's 4-0 loss at FC Girondins de Bordeaux on matchday one was their heaviest away defeat in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League.

• Twice coach of Belgium, Club Brugge boss Georges Leekens represented the Bruges side as a defender (1972–81), winning five titles. He then scooped a sixth crown – and indeed a second Belgian Cup – as the club's coach in the early 1990s. Leekens has coached most of Belgium's top clubs, as well as Trabzonspor AŞ in Turkey and Roda JC in the Netherlands.

• A defensive midfielder, Marítimo coach Pedro Martins reached a career peak with a three-year spell at Sporting (1995–98), later representing Boavista FC and CD Santa Clara.  He moved into coaching in the lower leagues, replacing Mitchell van der Gaag at Marítimo in 2010 following a spell as the club's youth team boss.
