Stalemate better for Metalist than Leverkusen

FC Metalist Kharkiv's Cristian Villagra was happy with "a point against probably the best team in the group", but a 0-0 home draw was not what Bayer 04 Leverkusen hoped for.

Gonzalo Castro said he and his Bayer 04 Leverkusen team-mates must make amends for a "disappointing" opening night when the Bundesliga club travel to Rosenborg BK for their next UEFA Europa League Group K encounter. However, Cristian Villagra sounded pleased enough with FC Metalist Kharkiv's 0-0 draw in Germany.

Gonzalo Castro, Leverkusen midfielder
From the first whistle we put Metalist under pressure and, 15 seconds in, we could well have scored and things would have been different. We deserved a better result than 0-0, in my opinion. Naturally, we wanted to win the first game and not to have done so is very disappointing. But we have to look ahead. It will be tough because in the Europa League we are up against some very good teams. In the next group game in Norway, we must take all three points.

Daniel Schwaab, Leverkusen defender
In spells against Metalist we played some good football, but we know that in the upcoming group matches we have to reach that level from start to finish, not just in certain phases of the game. If we can do that, we will score goals. Next we have another difficult game against Rosenborg and we have to be focused on getting it right for the full 90 minutes.

Stefan Kiessling, Leverkusen striker
It's a little frustrating for us because we played well enough and deserved to win the game. However, we know we have to be more clinical. It's the same in the Bundesliga, where we've taken three points from our first three games. It's not really bad, but we know we can do better.

Sascha Lewandowski, Leverkusen coach
We felt we played well on the night, even if for a couple of spells in the game weren't as strong as we would have liked. Of course, we would have been much happier to have taken all three points, but if you don't finish off your chances this is what happens.

Cristian Villagra, Metalist defender
Our target is definitely to win our home games and then, if we can also pick up more points away, we'll be in a very strong position. I'm very pleased with the result we have got against Leverkusen – we took a point against probably the best team in the group. They put us under a lot of pressure, but we coped well with it. Naturally, we will have a much more attacking approach in our next game, at home against Rapid Wien.

Myron Markevich, Metalist coach
I wouldn't say we were at our best today, but it was important for us to get points on the board early in the competition and we have one. Leverkusen have a very strong squad, so to play in Germany and pick up a point isn't too bad.
