UEFA Europa League contenders FC Twente are set to start their campaign without Leroy Fer after the midfielder injured his knee while on international duty for the Netherlands.
The 22-year-old has undergone surgery to attend to meniscus damage in his left knee after he contested the last 40 minutes of the Oranje's 2-0 home defeat of Turkey in their opening 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday.
Although no expected return date has been announced, Fer is likely to be missing for the next two to six weeks. "From now on, I will concentrate on my recovery and I'll come back stronger," he said.
Twente begin their UEFA Europa League Group L bid at home against Hannover 96 on Thursday 20 September, before following up at Helsingborgs IF on 4 October. Meanwhile, the Netherlands have called up AZ Alkmaar midfielder Adam Maher to replace Fer in Tuesday's qualifier against Hungary.
