Tottenham Hotspur FC have suffered an injury blow with the news that central defender Younès Kaboul will be out for around four months following knee surgery.

Kaboul played in the north London team's defeat at Newcastle United FC on the opening day of the Premier League season but missed last weekend's 1-1 home draw with West Bromwich Albion FC after reportedly experiencing knee pain in training. The 26-year-old French international was also unavailable for UEFA EURO 2012 because of knee trouble. He has scored five goals in 86 top-flight appearances for Spurs and has featured five times for France.

It was not all bad news for Tottenham, though, as England forward Jermain Defoe put pen to paper on a contract extension that will keep him at White Hart Lane until 2015. Defoe, 29, has scored 80 goals in 230 Premier League games during two spells with the club.

André Villas-Boas's side will enter the UEFA Europa League at the group stage and will find out their opponents in tomorrow's draw.
