FC Dinamo Moskva have appointed Dan Petrescu as their new coach, with the ex-Romanian international filling the void left by the departure of Sergei Silkin.

The 44-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the capital club after resigning from his post at Russian Premier League rivals FC Kuban Krasnodar on Tuesday. His predecessor Silkin had stood down on 6 August after Dinamo's 4-0 home defeat by FC Spartak Moskva.

Petrescu retired from playing in 2003 to pursue a career in coaching, beginning with FC Rapid București. Spells at Wisła Kraków and FC Unirea Urziceni followed, before he enjoyed his greatest success at Kuban Krasnodar, guiding them to promotion to the top flight in 2010. However, his new charges lie bottom of the elite division after starting the season with four straight losses.

Led by interim coach Dmitri Khokhlov, Dinamo did overcome Dundee United FC 7-2 on aggregate in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round and now face VfB Stuttgart in the play-offs. The first leg takes place on Wednesday in Germany.
