Sporting Clube de Portugal have shored up their defence with the signing of Dutch international Khalid Boulahrouz from VfB Stuttgart.
Boulahrouz, 30, has signed a two-year deal with an option of a third. He was a free agent after leaving the German club, where he made 83 appearances, scoring twice. Groomed at RKC Waalwijk, he also represented Hamburger SV, Chelsea FC and Sevilla FC, and has 35 caps for his country. He joins fellow countrymen Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Stijn Schaars at Estadio José Alvalade.
"I am very ambitious, just like Sporting, and I felt I could fit well in this club," Boulahrouz said. I am here to help the team and to win titles. I will work hard and I hope I can give many reasons to the fans celebrate.
"I like the way they play in Portugal and the atmosphere is very good as I played here a couple of times before. The teams play with their hearts which pleases me."
Sporting, fourth-place finishers in the Liga last season and defeated by A. Académica de Coimbra in the Portuguese Cup final, begin their UEFA Europa League campaign in the play-offs next month.
