Thirty-three teams celebrated UEFA Europa League progress, emulating four clubs who advanced earlier in the week, as the first qualifying round concluded on Thursday.
It was a night high in excitement but low on surprises, with just three sides managing to overturn a first-leg deficit. Another comfortable win against UE Santa Coloma eased FC Twente through, while a 1-0 victory for Rosenborg BK and a 1-1 draw for KKS Lech Poznań were sufficient after respective opening successes against Crusaders FC and FC Zhetysu Taldykorgan.
For a number of teams away goals proved decisive. Armenia's FC Gandzasar progressed with a 3-3 aggregate draw against EB/Streymur following a 3-1 opening-leg setback in the Faroe Islands. FK Sūduva matched that achievement, a 3-2 away win cancelling out a 1-0 loss last week and eliminating FC Daugava Daugavpils. Kalmar FF were the only other team to reverse a defeat, scoring four times without reply versus Cliftonville FC.
In the most goal-laden contest, FK Sarajevo accounted for Hibernians FC. The Bosnian side won the first leg 5-2 and were 3-1 up after just 27 minutes of the return, but three home goals before the break ensured Sarajevo of a nervy second half. The hosts could not score again, however, and a late equaliser sent Sarajevo through 9-6 overall.
Georgia's FC Metalurgi Rustavi were the biggest winners of the night, defeating KS Teuta 6-1 at home, 9-1 on aggregate, to set up a tie against FC Viktoria Plzeň, who rubbed shoulders with AC Milan and FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League group stage last term.
Elsewhere, NK Olimpija Ljubljana and FC Differdange 03 repeated their first-leg results with 3-0 wins against AS Jeunesse Esch and NSÍ Runavík respectively. Fair Play qualifiers Stabæk Fotball overcame JJK Jyväskylä 3-2 but still went out 4-3, while FK Borac Banja Luka, FC Levadia Tallinn and Saint Patrick's Athletic FC were grateful for away goals.
It was not a good night for British clubs, though, with Welsh trio Bangor City FC, Llanelli AFC and Cefn Druids AFC joining Northern Ireland's Cliftonville and Crusaders in falling at the first hurdle.
