Memories will come flooding back as Malmö FF take on FK Austria Wien in UEFA Europa League Group G, having beaten their visitors to reach the 1979 European Champion Clubs' Cup final.
Previous meetings
• Bob Houghton's Malmö famously denied Hermann Stessl's Austria a place in the 1978/79 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, beating them 1-0 over two legs in the semi-finals (Tommy Hansson heading the only goal of the tie in Sweden) before losing to Nottingham Forest FC by the same scoreline in the final.
• The teams for that meeting at the Malmö Stadion on 25 April 1979 were:
Malmö: Möller, Roland Andersson, Erlandsson, Roy Andersson, Magnus Andersson, Tapper, Ljungberg, Jönsson, Hansson, Cervin (Tommy Andersson 80), Kinnvall.
Austria: Baumgartner, Robert Sara, Obermayer, Pospischil, Baumeister, Josef Sara, Parits, Prohaska, Daxbacher (Zach 55), Gasselich, Schachner.
• Austria Wien's current boss Karl Daxbacher started both games, but was substituted before the end of each.
Match background
• That semi-final success was Malmö's only experience of Austrian opposition.
• Austria have played two further games against Swedish sides, losing both, to leave them with the record W0 D1 L3 against Swedish sides (W0 D0 L2 in Sweden).
• Malmö are unbeaten in three UEFA home games this season – two wins and a draw.
• Austria have not won in 15 UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League group stage games (three draws and 12 defeats) since winning 2-1 at FC Utrecht in their final fixture of the 2004/05 group stage.
Team facts
• Austria's Alexander Grünwald committed more fouls than any other player on matchday one; six in total.
• Austria's Dutch attacker Nacer Barazite was the top scorer in UEFA Europa League qualifying this season, hitting eight goals in six appearances. The former Arsenal FC trainee joined Austria in January following loan spells with Derby County FC and Vitesse.
• Malmö boss Rikard Norling's midfield career was cut short by injury, but he made his name as a coach, taking charge of AIK Solna and Assyriska Föreningen before replacing FC København-bound Roland Nilsson at the helm of the Swedish champions.
• Six-times capped Austria midfielder Daxbacher racked up almost 400 league appearances as a player for Austria Wien, winning seven titles and four Austrian Cups, as well as playing in the 1978 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final, which his side lost 4-0 to RSC Anderlecht. He has coached his old club since 2008, winning the Austrian Cup in his first full season in charge.
