AEK Athens FC have announced the signing of midfielder Fabián Vargas on a free transfer from UD Almería.
The Colombian international has penned a one-year contract with the UEFA Europa League contenders, who have the option of extending it by a further 12 months. Vargas said he is "coming to Greece with high expectations" having been limited to 30 Liga appearances in two seasons with Almería because of an injury sustained on international duty in September 2009.
The 31-year-old made his name in six seasons with CA Boca Juniors − lifting the Intercontinental Cup as an unused substitute in 2003 against AC Milan − after starting his career in his homeland with CD América. A Copa América winner a decade ago, he has been capped 41 times by Colombia.
AEK are in Group L of the UEFA Europa League with RSC Anderlecht, SK Sturm Graz and FC Lokomotiv Moskva.
