UEFA Europa League play-off contenders AS Roma have signed Spanish Under-21 international left-back José Ángel Valdés from Real Sporting de Gijón for a fee believed to be in the region of €4.5m.
The 21-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with the Serie A side, having featured in the Spain squad that prevailed at this summer's UEFA European U21 Championship, though he did not play a game in the final tournament in Denmark. He will meet up with his new team-mates at their Riscone di Brunico training base today.
A statement from Sporting Gijón said that the Liga outfit wished the player "who developed his career from the youngest age at the club, every success in the future". Roma finished sixth in Serie A last season.
