Stijn Schaars believes he "can give something extra to the team" after signing a three-year contract with Sporting Clube de Portugal.
Schaars, who has won 15 caps for the Netherlands and was part of the Oranje squad which reached last summer's FIFA World Cup final, arrives in Lisbon for a fee of €850,000 after six seasons with AZ Alkmaar. The 27-year-old midfielder played in all six of AZ's UEFA Europa League group games last season.
Sporting will enter the 2011/12 edition at the play-off stage under the charge of Domingos Paciência, a runner-up with SC Braga last term. "I think I can give something extra to the team," Schaars said. "I know Sporting is a great club; Luís Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani played here. I'm anxious to start playing."
