Liverpool FC will face AC Sparta Praha in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 next week without midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who has been ruled out for up to three months with a knee tendon problem.
Shelvey withdrew from an England Under-19 friendly against Germany on Tuesday and will now begin a lengthy rehabilitation programme with the Premier League club's medical staff. The 18-year-old said: "I'm a bit down at the moment but I'm just hoping I can come back stronger."
Shelvey's only starts for Liverpool since joining last summer have been in the UEFA Europa League, with the former Charlton Athletic FC player featuring four times as the Reds topped Group K. Kenny Dalglish's team visit Sparta on Thursday for the first leg of their tie, with the return taking place at Anfield the following week.
