• Born in Germany to Italian parents, Labbadia started out as a striker with hometown club Darmstadt. His finest hours were victories in the German Cup (1990) and a league title (1991) with Kaiserslautern, and a second Bundesliga crown with Bayern in 1994.

• His international career consisted of two brief substitute appearances in friendlies but Labbadia earned a place in history as the first player to score more than 100 goals in each of Germany's top two divisions: 103 in the top tier, 101 in the second.

• Went back to his roots to start his coaching career at Darmstadt in 2003, winning promotion to the third tier in his first season; left after failing to go up another level in the following two campaigns.

• In his only season with Greuther, 2007/08, he narrowly missed out on promotion to the Bundesliga before being hired by Leverkusen, who made a flying start to 2008/09 but tailed off in the spring, leading to Labbadia's resignation.

• Hamburg, who he represented as a player in the late 1980s, took him on in summer 2009, allowing him to coach for the first time in European club competition. Sacked in April 2010, that December he took over at Stuttgart.
