FC Spartak Moskva have extended the contract of head coach and general director Valeri Karpin for a further 18 months.
The former Spartak and Russia midfielder, 41, was appointed Spartak's general director in August 2008 and stepped into the coach's position the following April to combine the two roles – he will now be in charge until the summer of 2012.
After guiding Spartak to a second-place Russian Premier-Liga finish in 2009, Karpin led them to fourth this year. The capital club came third in their UEFA Champions League group in the autumn to qualify for the UEFA Europa League knockout stages. They have been drawn against FC Basel 1893 in the last 32 of that competition, with the tie taking place in February.
