Beşiktaş JK have made their second significant signing in as many days by completing a €2m deal to sign Portugal forward Hugo Almeida from SV Werder Bremen.
The 26-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract only a day after the Black Eagles recruited another Portuguese international, Simão, from Club Atlético de Madrid. "I am happy to be turning a new page in my career by joining one of the marquee teams in Turkey," said Hugo Almeida, who has scored 12 times in 33 appearances for his country.
"What makes me happier is the opportunity I have now to play alongside [Ricardo] Quaresma and Simão. They seem like a team with passion and I aim to contribute new successes. Quaresma informed me about the team and it's a well-structured club."
A youth product of FC Porto, Hugo Almeida left his homeland to join Bremen on loan in the 2006/07, moving permanently the following season. He leaves the Weserstadion with 41 Bundesliga strikes from 117 games, including nine in 13 this term.
A member of Portugal's UEFA EURO 2008 and 2010 FIFA World Cup squads, Hugo Almeida also scored once in five UEFA Champions League appearances this season as well as a hat-trick in his final league game for Werder against FC St Pauli.
Beşiktaş sit fifth in the Turkish Super League at the winter break, 14 points adrift of leaders Trabzonspor AŞ, but are through to the UEFA Europa League round of 32 where they meet FC Dynamo Kyiv.
