Dortmund under duress as Karpaty call

Sitting third in Group J, Borussia Dortmund host FC Karpaty Lviv aiming to repeat their Matchday 1 success against the Ukrainian side and revitalise their UEFA Europa League hopes.

• Dortmund will be out if they lose and Paris Saint-Germain FC pick up a point or more against Sevilla FC. Draws in both Group J fixtures would also spell the end for the Bundesliga outfit. Karpaty are already resigned to elimination, meanwhile.

Previous meetings
• In the highest-scoring game of the 2010/11 group stage to date, late goals from Mario Götze and Lucas Barrios give Dortmund a 4-3 win in Ukraine as the sides were acquainted for the first time on Matchday 1. It was Karpaty's first encounter with a German team.

• Dortmund met both of Ukraine's leading lights – FC Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Dynamo Kyiv – in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League, with their record in those four matches reading W3 D1 L0 (W2 D0 L0 at home).

Match background
• Dortmund have not triumphed in Europe since beating Karpaty on Matchday 1, recording two draws and a defeat in their subsequent games. They have won only one of their last seven UEFA club competition fixtures at home, seeing off FK Qarabağ 4-0 in this season's UEFA Europa League play-offs.

• Karpaty set a new club record against Sevilla on Matchday 3, and will break it again on Matchday 5. This will be the latest date in any calendar year that they have contested a UEFA club competition game. The 2-0 Matchday 2 loss to PSG came on the 40th anniversary of their previous latest date, a 3-3 draw at FC Steaua Bucureşti on 30 September 1970.

• Karpaty have not won in their last six continental fixtures, following up two draws with four straight defeats in Group J. They have not scored in three UEFA Europa League outings since their last meeting with Dortmund.

• Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp started his career as a striker, converting to a defender midway through an 11-year spell at 1. FSV Mainz 05. Moving from the pitch to the bench in 2001, he led Mainz to the top division in Germany – and into European competition – for the first time, but stepped down at the end of the 2007/08 campaign to replace Thomas Doll as Dortmund coach. He signed a contract extension on 25 November.

• Born in Kursk, Russia, but Belarusian by nationality, Karpaty coach Oleg Kononov began his playing days with FC Iskra Smolensk but spent most of his career in Belarus, winning the nation's Player of the Year award in 1998, during his time at FC Torpedo Minsk. He took over at Karpaty in 2008 following a spell as assistant coach at FC Sheriff in Moldova.
