Vulnerable away but on song at home, BSC Young Boys will be looking to avenge a Matchday 1 defeat by Group H leaders VfB Stuttgart and potentially put themselves through to the UEFA Europa League round of 32.
• Only a Young Boys win can deny Stuttgart, who have already qualified, top spot in Group H. The Berne side can only progress on Matchday 5 if they win and Odense BK and Getafe CF draw in the section's other game.
Previous meetings
• A Cacau penalty and further strikes from Christian Gentner and Serdar Tasci gave Stuttgart a 3-0 win when the teams crossed paths for the first time on Matchday 1.
• Young Boys' ten outings against rivals from Germany have ended W1 D5 L4 (W1 D2 L2 as the home side). Their sole win was a 2-1 success against FC Wismut Aue in a 1958/59 European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-final replay staged on neutral territory in Amsterdam, in which the Berne club were the nominal home side.
• Stuttgart's record in seven games against Swiss opponents is an impressive W7 D0 L0 (W3 D0 L0 in Switzerland). Those fixtures have produced an aggregate score of 25-5, meaning the Bundesliga outfit have averaged well over three goals per game.
Match background
• Young Boys have conceded nine times and failed to register in their last three European away fixtures, but they are much more impressive at home, where they are unbeaten in four games this season – the three most recent resulting in victories.
• Stuttgart are unbeaten in eight European matches this term and have won all four of their Group H ties. They have yet to concede a goal in Europe under Jens Keller and have won all four of their 2010/11 continental away fixtures.
• They have lost only two of their last 12 UEFA Europa League away games, winning nine.
Team facts
• As they go into their 177th UEFA club competition game, Stuttgart are three shy of conceding their 200th European goal.
• Young Boys' Sarajevo-born coach Vladimir Petković was a midfielder for FK Sarajevo as well as a number of Swiss clubs. As a coach, he worked his way up from assistant at AC Bellinzona to lead AC Lugano, then Bellinzona, before taking charge of Young Boys in 2008.
• Stuttgart parted company with Swiss coach Christian Gross on 13 October with the club bottom of the Bundesliga. He had joined VfB in December last year. Gross has been replaced by his assistant Keller, a former Stuttgart player who also represented TSV 1860 München, VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt.
