Dzsudzsák delight with collector's item for PSV

"It was my goal," said Balázs Dzsudzsák after his fortuitous intervention to Erik Pieters's cross earned PSV Eindhoven a 2-1 victory over former club Debreceni VSC.

When Pieters shaped to deliver the ball into the box midway through the second half in Budapest the most obvious threat appeared to be Jonathan Reis, lurking at the far post. Yet the ball ricocheted off the back of the nearby Dzsudzsák's head and somehow looped in. "It is probably the first goal I have scored with my head!" the 23-year-old joked.

"There's been some debate over who scored it but after the game Jonathan said he didn't touch it and that it was my goal. I'm happy that we got three points. Everyone thought we would win with a nice attack and goal, but instead we won with a strange and lucky goal." They all count, though, and the win leaves PSV top of UEFA Europa League Group I ahead of their home meeting – though not without a huge scare from a Debrecen side rooted to the foot of the section without a point.

"We got three points and that's why we came here," said Dzsudzsák, returning to his hometown to face a club he spent four years with before joining PSV in 2008. "As soon as we went 2-1 up we didn't risk going forward too much, instead focusing on retaining possession. I thought Debrecen would push forward but they couldn't get at us – in the end the last 20 minutes were quite easy."

Team-mate Ola Toivonen admitted Debrecen were "defensively better than we were expecting" though Zoltán Nagy rued his side's failure to preserve their lead after Mirsad Mijadinoski's 35-minute opener. Orlando Engelaar quickly equalised. "If we had gone in for half-time a goal up it would have been harder for PSV," said Nagy. "They made it hard in the last 25 minutes and we couldn't keep the ball. We made things difficult for ourselves."
