Nenê strike sees PSG stun Sevilla

Paris Saint-Germain FC's UEFA Europa League Group J hopes were given a huge lift after Nenê's second-half strike secured a famous 1-0 victory at Sevilla FC.

With 15 minutes to go, the Ligue 1 side made the breakthrough. Clément Chantôme's low pass from a central position found Péguy Luyindula who in turn released Nenê on the left. The Brazilian forward's shot flew past Sevilla goalkeeper Andrés Palop via a touch from Martín Cáceres.

Seeking a European fillip following their UEFA Champions League play-off defeat by SC Braga, Sevilla made a bright start against the French Cup winners. Alexis sought to mark his debut for the Andalusians with a goal yet PSG keeper Apoula Édel held on to the defender's downward shot in the sixth minute.

PSG grew in confidence as the opening half progressed and coach Antoine Kombouaré cut a disappointed figure when his team failed to convert one of a series of good chances. The sprightly Nenê did well to cut a pass back across Palop's goal, but Chantôme blasted over with the net at his mercy. 

Luyindula then poked Mevlüt Erdinç through after a penetrating run, yet with Palop advancing the Turkish international raked his effort wide. The keeper's good work continued as he beat out a lifted Erdinç attempt that capped a wonderful move for the side that won the 1996 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. 

Sevilla appeared to find more of a cutting edge after half-time with the introduction of Frédéric Kanouté and Diego Perotti, though the Ligue 1 club remained a constant menace on the break. So while Sevillla dominated possession, it was to be PSG who scooped the points, as Nenê applied the finishing touch to one of a number of dangerous counterattacks.
