Turkish international midfielder Mehmet Aurélio has returned to Istanbul to join Beşiktaş JK on a free transfer following a spell in Spain with Real Betis Balompié.
The Brazilian-born midfielder, 32, has signed a two-year contract with UEFA Europa League contenders Beşiktaş, having left Betis on a free transfer. He first arrived in Turkey in 2001, winning the 2003 Turkish Cup with Trabzonspor AŞ before being lured to Fenerbahçe SK, where he won three league titles in a five-year spell.
He took Turkish citizenship in July 2006, and has since been capped 33 times by his adopted country, playing at UEFA EURO 2008. He joined Betis in 2008 and made 55 league appearances in two seasons in southern Spain. Beşiktaş hold a 2-0 lead going into the away leg of their UEFA Europa League play-off against HJK Helsinki.
