Club Atlético de Madrid reserve goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo has been ruled out of the UEFA Europa League final against Fulham FC on Wednesday after it was confirmed the 20-year-old tore cruciate ligaments in his right knee.
The Spanish Under-21 international started the 1-1 Liga draw at Real Sporting de Gijón ahead of first-choice David de Gea, but was forced out of the game in the 13th minute after landing awkwardly under a challenge from Mate Bilić. Subsequent tests revealed the extent of the injury and Asenjo is now scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday before beginning a six-month rehabilitation period.
