Sporting Clube de Portugal have installed Carlos Carvalhal as coach on a contract until the end of the season with an option for a further year following the resignation of Paulo Bento.

Mixed fortunes
Despite the Lisbon side looking well set to advance to the UEFA Europa League knockout rounds, domestic struggles pre-empted the departure of Bento on 6 November. His successor Carvalhal was appointed on Sunday. The 43-year-old first made coaching headlines in 2001/02 when guiding third division Leixões SC to the Portuguese Cup final, which was lost 1-0 to Sporting. He subsequently led Vitória FC, CF Os Belenenses, SC Braga and SC Beira-Mar, before a second stint at Setúbal brought success – and revenge against Sporting – in 2008's inaugural Portuguese League Cup final.

Recent sacking
Carvalhal then spent six months in charge of Greek team Asteras Tripolis FC last season, while further disappointment followed at CS Marítimo where he was sacked in September after seven months at the helm. Sporting are eighth in the Portuguese Liga, eleven points adrift of leaders Braga, but need just a draw from their remaining two Group D games to reach the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League.
