A 3-0 loss at Athletic Club Bilbao on Matchday 1 has left FK Austria Wien without a win – or a goal – in four group stage games in Europe, a situation they will hope to resolve when CD Nacional visit Vienna.
Previous meetings
• The sides are meeting for the first time and this is Nacional's first match against any Austrian opponents. Austria Wien, meanwhile, have not won in six games against Portuguese clubs, with their three previous home ties yielding two 1-1 draws and a 1-0 defeat.
Match background
• Austria Wien reached the quarter-finals following a successful first appearance in the UEFA Cup group stage in 2004/05 but they missed the cut in 2006/07 and 2007/08. Including that latter campaign they have recorded three defeats and a goalless draw in their last four group stage games.
• That said, the club are on a run of five straight home wins in UEFA club competition.
• Having staged their UEFA Cup group stage games at the Ernst Happel Stadium in the past, Austria Wien are playing at their own more modest Franz Horr Stadium this season. They have not lost there in ten European games since a 1-0 reverse against Udinese Calcio on 26 July 2000 in that year's UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-finals.
• Nacional are making their debut in the group stage of a UEFA club competition. Their two previous European campaigns ended with first-round losses in the 2004/05 and 2006/07 UEFA Cups.
Team facts
• Austria Wien boss Karl Daxbacher won six caps as a midfielder for his country in a playing career during which he spent 14 years at the club he now serves as coach. He returned to take the reins in 2008, following a spell in charge at LASK Linz.
• His counterpart Machado is in his second stint at the Nacional helm. He started his coaching career in his native Guimaraes as a youth trainer at Vitória SC, eventually leading the senior team there as well as having spells at A. Académica de Coimbra and SC Braga.
• From the Atlantic island of Madeira, Nacional's most significant recent claim to fame has been that Funchal-born Cristiano Ronaldo spent two years with the club before joining Sporting Clube de Portugal's Alcochete academy at the age of 12 in 1997.
• Austria Wien host Bremen on Matchday 3, while Nacional will visit Athletic on the same night, 22 October.
