Determined Galatasaray hold on in Hamburg

Galatasaray AŞ are in the driving seat in their UEFA Cup Round of 16 tie following an impressive 1-1 first-leg draw at Hamburger SV.

Ayhan Akman gave the Turkish champions a 33rd-minute lead, but while Marcell Jansen equalised early in the second half for the Bundesliga side, they failed to seize the initiative following the dismissal of Emre Aşık on 53 minutes. It leaves Bülent Korkmaz's side with a minor advantage ahead of the second instalment at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium in seven days.

Ayhan opener
Piotr Trochowski threatened the Galatasaray goal with two early shots from distance, blazing one just over and forcing Morgan De Sanctis to save a second. His opposite number Frank Rost had little to do in the early stages, bar catching a Lincoln free-kick, but was forced to retrieve the ball from the back of his net just after the half-hour mark. Jerome Boateng's challenge on Lincoln pushed the ball into the path of Ayhan and the 32-year-old pounced, powering a shot in off the inside of his left-hand post.

Jansen leveller
Martin Jol's side were back in the game again five minutes after the break when José Paolo Guerrero's cross was headed back across goal by Mladen Petrić and Jansen volleyed past De Sanctis from close range. Shabani Nonda might have quickly restored the Turkish side's advantage when he was put through with Rost a long way off his line, but he lifted his effort over the Hamburg goalkeeper and the crossbar.

Late flurry
Galatasaray were soon reduced to ten men as Emre felled Petrić after Guerrero's ball had sent him through on goal. The hosts surged forward and twice went close as Mehmet Güven headed Collin Benjamin's volley on to his own crossbar and an Ivica Olić strike grazed the post. At the other end Ümit Karan thought he had scored at the death only for his effort to be chalked off for a foul.
