Galatasaray AŞ will be hoping for a case of third time lucky when they travel to face FC Girondins de Bordeaux for the first leg of their UEFA Cup Round of 32 tie. The Turkish giants suffered European defeats at the Stade Chaban-Delmas in both 2006/07 and 2007/08.

• The teams clashed twice in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League group stage, Ricardo Gomes's Bordeaux following up a 0-0 draw in Istanbul with a 3-1 home success.

• Alejandro César Alonso, Lilian Laslandes and Julien Faubert all scored for Bordeaux prior to Arda Turan's dismissal for the visitors. Galatasaray, then coached by Erik Gerets, grabbed a 73rd-minute consolation via Junichi Inamoto.

• The lineups that day were:
Bordeaux: Ulrich Ramé, Franck Jurietti, Lilian Laslandes, Alejandro César Alonso, Jean-Claude Darcheville (Gabriel Obertan, 46), Johan Micoud (Stéphane Dalmat, 79), Wendel (Pierre Ducasse, 68), Julien Faubert, Joseph Enakarhire, Rio Antonio Mavuba, Marc Planus.
Galatasaray: Faryd Mondragón, Rigobert Song, Hakan Şükür (Mehmet Topal, 63), Hasan Şaş (Ergün Penbe, 69), Ayhan Akman, Cihan Haspolatlı, Saša Ilić (Ümit Karan, 46), Junichi Inamoto, Tolga Seyhan, Sabri Sarıoğlu, Arda Turan.

• The two clubs also met in Group H of the 2007/08 UEFA Cup, a match Laurent Blanc's Bordeaux won 2-1 at the Stade Chaban-Delmas. Former Blackburn Rovers FC and AS Roma striker Shabani Nonda struck first from the penalty spot for coach Karl-Heinz Feldkamp's Galatasaray, only for second-half goals from Fernando Cavenaghi and Marouane Chamakh to turn the scoreline on its head.

• The lineups in Bordeaux on 25 October 2007 were:
Bordeaux: Ulrich Ramé, Florian Marange, Benoît Trémoulinas (Wendel, 75), Matthieu Chalmé, Souleymane Diawara, David Jemmali (Marc Planus, 28), Fernando (Alou Diarra, 61), Johan Micoud, Pierre Ducasse, Fernando Cavenaghi, Marouane Chamakh.
Galatasaray: Orkun Uşak, Rigobert Song, Servet Çetin, Barış Özbek (Mehmet Topal, 72), Volkan Yaman, Tobias Linderoth (Serkan Çalık, 86), Uğur Uçar (Marcelo Carrusca, 78), Arda Turan, Hasan Şaş, Shabani Nonda, Ümit Karan.

• Bordeaux have played a total of five competitive games against Turkish sides and their record reads W2 D2 L1. Since a 3-2 home defeat by Fenerbahçe SK in the first round of the 1985/86 European Champion Clubs' Cup, they have gone four matches unbeaten against Süper Lig clubs, picking up two away draws and two home wins.

• Galatasaray's record reads W5 D3 L7 from 15 European games against French opposition.

• Bordeaux coach Blanc faced Turkish opponents only once during his playing career, the former France defender netting one of his 16 senior international goals in Les Bleus' 4-0 friendly win over Turkey on 9 October 1996 in Paris.

• Galatasaray's German boss Michael Skibbe has been involved in just one previous tie against French opposition. His Bayer 04 Leverkusen team won 3-0 at home and lost 2-1 in France to progress at RC Lens' expense in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup Round of 16.

• Bordeaux defender Franck Jurietti and Galatasaray forward Nonda were team-mates at AS Monaco FC between 2000 and 2003. They played together in a 4-2 UEFA Champions League group-stage win against Galatasaray on 25 October 2000, a game in which Nonda scored Monaco's fourth goal.

• Milan Baroš is Galatasaray's top European goalscorer this season with four, while fellow former Liverpool FC team-mate Harry Kewell has two.

• Yoann Gourcuff's two-goal haul made him the only Bordeaux player to score more than once in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage.

• Bordeaux can point to only one defeat from their last nine European home matches. They were beaten 3-1 by Group A rivals AS Roma in this season's UEFA Champions League.

• Galatasaray have won on their last three European away days.

• The first leg will be Galatasaray's 50th UEFA Cup fixture while the second leg of the tie will be Bordeaux's 100th UEFA Cup match.

• Galatasaray are one of six sides in the UEFA Cup who qualified for Europe this season as domestic champions. The others are R. Standard de Liège (Belgium), Olympiacos CFP (Greece), Aalborg BK (Denmark), FC Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) and FC Zenit St. Petersburg (Russia).

• Bordeaux, runners-up in France in 2007/08, qualified for the UEFA Cup Round of 32 as the third-placed side in UEFA Champions League Group A. Galatasaray, for their part, came second in UEFA Cup Group B.

• Bordeaux's Mathieu Chalmé is suspended for this match, while team-mates Marouane Chamakh, Souleymane Diawara, Yohann Gourcuff and Franck Jurietti will all miss the second leg if they receive a booking. The same is true for Galatasaray's Fernando Meira and Lincoln.
