FC Metalist Kharkiv secured a dramatic UEFA Cup Group B victory at Galatasaray AŞ thanks to Edmar's strike nine minutes from time.
Home side stunned
Galatasaray had won their first two group games and were on top in Istanbul but could find no way past inspired Metalist goalkeeper Olexandr Goriainov. Edmar's goal ensured the points went to Ukraine and they are now just two adrift of leaders Galatasaray with a game in hand.
Early dominance
The Turkish club knew a victory would book a berth in the Round of 32, where they lost to Bayer 04 Leverkusen last season, and the 2000 UEFA Cup winners took the game to Metalist from the start. They almost made an early breakthrough when Volkan Yaman's right-footed shot was tipped round the post by Goriainov and the goalkeeper excelled himself again in the 11th minute to turn Arda Turan's effort of the bar.
Further chances
Arda forced two move saves from Goriainov in quick succession and Galatasaray's pressure seemed to have told on 31 minutes but Milan Baroš was offside when he turned in Lincoln's pass across the face of goal. Goriainov then had to be alert to save from Sabri Sarıoğlu as Michael Skibbe's men continued to monopolise the play.
Late twist
They remained dominant after the interval and Goriainov performed heroics again to deny Sabri. Baroš was also frustrated by the in-form goalkeeper and Metalist proved to have a sting in their tail when Edmar shot into the bottom corner from the left of the area. Metalist will aim to move to within sight of the knockout phase when they welcome Olympiacos CFP on 3 December, a night when Galatasaray will again bid to seal their progress in their last group fixture at Hertha BSC Berlin.
