Makaay returns to old stamping ground

Alarm bells are ringing for both RC Deportivo La Coruña and Feyenoord as they head into their Matchday 3 meeting in UEFA Cup Group H, with Roy Makaay preparing for an emotional return to the Riazor.

• The Dutch striker, who joined Feyenoord from FC Bayern München in summer 2007, enjoyed some of his finest years with Deportivo, the club the former BV Vitesse striker joined from CD Tenerife in 1999.

• Makaay scored 79 league goals in 133 games for Depor, and 15 more in 39 games in UEFA club competition, before moving on to Bayern in 2003. He won the ESM Golden Shoe in his final season at the Riazor with 29 goals in 38 Liga games.

• During that period, Deportivo reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals twice, in 2000/01 and 2001/02, while his first season in La Coruna in 1999/00 ended with the Spanish title, the sole championship success in the club's history.

• Neither Deportivo or Feyenoord have picked up a single Group H point yet.

• Having lost 3-0 at PFC CSKA Moskva on Matchday 1, Deportivo were not in action on 6 November. Feyenoord lost 3-0 at AS Nancy-Lorraine in their opener, then went down 3-1 at home against CSKA in their last game.

• Should Feyenoord lose again this time out, they would have no chance of progressing to the UEFA Cup Round of 32.

• This is Deportivo and Feyenoord's first meeting in UEFA club competiton.

• Deportivo's only previous experience of Dutch opposition came against PSV Eindhoven in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League group stage, the Spanish side winning 2-0 at home but losing 3-2 away.

• Three current Feyenoord players were involved in those fixtures. Defender Kevin Hofland played for PSV in the defeat in Spain and was an unused substitute in the 3-2 home win. Goalkeeper Rob van Dijk was an unused replacement in both matches, while Theo Lucius failed to make it off the bench in La Coruna.

• Feyenoord have played 13 games against Spanish sides including the final of the 2002 UEFA Super Cup, which they lost 3-1 to Real Madrid CF. Of those games they have won five, drawn two and lost six.

• In Spain the Rotterdam outfit have won two games, drawn one and lost the remaining three.

• Deportivo coach Miguel Ángel Lotina came up against Dutch opponents in the form of AFC Ajax in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League group stage during his time in charge of RC Celta de Vigo. His side lost 1-0 in Amsterdam but prevailed 3-2 at home.

• Lotina has never lost a home game in continental fixtures with any of his previous clubs: Celta, RCD Espanyol or Deportivo. His ten UEFA club competition home games have ended in eight wins and two draws, and his sides have never failed to score at least once in those matches.

• Deportivo are also unbeaten in their last seven European home games, a run stretching back to a 5-0 UEFA Champions League Group A defeat at the hands of AS Monaco FC in December 2004.

• Feyenoord coach Gertjan Verbeek has led a side in Spain once before, with his SC Heerenveen team drawing 0-0 at CA Osasuna in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup group stage.

• Verbeek led Heerenveen in three campaigns in the UEFA Cup group stage, reaching the Round of 32 twice. However, he never won a group away game, drawing three and losing the other three.

• Feyenoord's Giovanni van Bronckhorst was in the Arsenal FC side that lost 2-0 at Deportivo in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League second group stage.

• Feyenoord's Jon Dahl Tomasson played against Deportivo four times while he was at AC Milan, in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League first group stage and the 2003/04 quarter-finals. His side won two of those games and lost two, and he scored the only Milan goal in a 2-1 home defeat in the second of those four meetings.

• Van Bronckhorst and Tomasson have both played in Spain recently, with FC Barcelona (2003-2007) and Villarreal CF (2007-2008) respectively.

• The only Deportivo player with experience of Dutch football is Brazilian defender Filipe, who spent a season on loan at Ajax in 2004/05 without making a league appearance.

• Depor midfielder Julian De Guzman is the older brother of Feyenoord counterpart Jonathan. Both were born in Canada and while Julian represents the country of his birth, Jonathan is also a Dutch national and has played for the Netherlands' Under-21 side.

• Tomasson is the only Feyenoord player who took part in their 2001/02 UEFA Cup triumph who is still playing for the club.

• Deportivo's Alberto Lopo is within a booking of a one-match ban.

• CSKA face KKS Lech Poznań in Matchday 3's other Group H tie. Nancy are the only side in the section not in action.
