Spanish international striker David Villa has signed a one-year extension to his contract with Valencia CF, tying him to the Mestalla club until 2014.
'Very happy'
The 26-year-old has been the subject of much summer transfer speculation after finishing as top scorer at UEFA EURO 2008™, but he put the rumours to rest on Wednesday by signing a new deal on improved terms. "It's a very happy day for me," Villa said. "I want to thank Valencia for their efforts and for everything the club have given me. I hope to maintain my level or perhaps even improve here."
EURO joy
Villa scored four goals in helping Spain lift the UEFA European Championship title in June, and has hit another 58 in 101 Liga games spanning three seasons with Valencia. The former Sporting Gijón and Real Zaragoza forward was also part of Valencia's Copa del Rey winning team in April, thus securing their place in this season's UEFA Cup first round.
