Anderlecht prepare for mission implausible

RSC Anderlecht need a miracle in their tenth competitive game against FC Bayern Münich if they are to overturn a 5-0 UEFA Cup deficit in Munich.

• Bayern were rampant in the first leg, and were a goal up through Hamit Altıntop before Marcin Wasilewski's dismissal tilted the odds further in their favour. Luca Toni, Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose and Franck Ribéry all scored before the final whistle.

• Toni's goal was his seventh since the first round and took him to the top of the UEFA Cup goalscorers' chart. Ribéry's strike was the 100th goal Anderlecht have conceded in 93 UEFA Cup games.

• The result was Anderlecht's heaviest European home defeat and matched their worst results in all UEFA club competitions, home and away. It also matched Bayern's best away wins in all European competitons.

• Bayern and Anderlecht have now met nine times, with the German side winning five, drawing two and losing two. The aggregate score from those meetings is 19-11 to the Bavarians.

• Their most recent meeting prior to this season's first leg was in 2003/04, when the two sides were drawn together in the UEFA Champions League group stage. The first meeting in Brussels ended in a 1-1 draw, with Roque Santa Cruz cancelling out Ivica Mornar's opener for Anderlecht. Bayern won their home fixture 1-0, with Roy Makaay scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

• Of the current Anderlecht side, goalkeeper Daniel Zítka and Olivier Deschacht played in both legs of the tie, while midfielder Mark De Man was an unused substitute in the first fixture.

• Bayern were coached by Ottmar Hitzfeld in both legs of that game while Oliver Kahn and Zé Roberto started the two games, with Bastian Schweinsteiger twice coming on as a substitute.

• Prior to those ties, the two sides had met in two European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-finals and the 1976 UEFA Super Cup. Of those two-legged ties, Anderlecht won two and Bayern one.

• Their first meeting was in the 1976 Super Cup. Bayern had beaten AS Saint-Etienne 1-0 to win the European Cup in Glasgow, while Anderlecht beat West Ham United FC 4-2 in Brussels to take the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

• Dettmar Cramer's Bayern won the first leg in Munich 2-1, with Gerhard Müller scoring twice following an Arie Haan opener for Anderlecht. Raymond Goethals' Anderlecht took a 3-0 lead in the second leg through goals from Rob Rensenbrink, Franky Van Der Elst and Haan, and although Müller grabbed a goal back, Rensenbrink struck again to win the match 4-1 and the tie 5-3 on aggregate.

• The two sides then met in two successive European Cup quarter-finals in 1985/86 and 1986/87. Twice a scorer in the UEFA Super Cup final between the two clubs, Haan was Anderlecht's coach for both ties while Bayern were led by Udo Lattek.

• The first tie ended in a 3-2 aggregate win for Anderlecht. They lost the first leg in Munich 2-1, with Dieter Hoeness and Michael Wohlfarth putting Bayern 2-0 up before Henrik Andersen pulled one back. Goals from Enzo Scifo and Per Frimann saw the Belgian side win the second leg 2-0. However, Anderlecht lost out in the semi-final to CSA Steaua Bucureşti.

• Lattek's side avenged that defeat in style the following season, winning 5-0 at home with goals from Michael Rumenigge, Hans Pflüger, Dieter Hoeness (2) and Wohlfarth. Bayern went on to reach the final that season but lost 2-1 to FC Porto despite leading 1-0 with 13 minutes to go at Vienna's Ernst-Happel-Stadion.

• Anderlecht have lost on all four of their previous visits to Bayern. They must score at least five goals to progress – something they have not done in a European away game since they won 6-1 at FK Lokomotiv Sofia in the first round of the 1977/78 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

• Anderlecht have now played 28 games against German opponents in UEFA club competition, winning ten, drawing three and losing 15. Of their 14 away games against Bundesliga sides, they have won three and lost eleven.

• Worryingly for Ariël Jacobs' side, Anderlecht have not won in their last ten games – home and away – against German teams.

• Bayern have now played 13 games against Belgian sides, including the nine against Anderlecht. Of those games they have won eight, drawn three and lost two. They have won all six of their home games against Belgian sides.

• The current Bayern side boast Belgian talent in the form of defender Daniel Van Buyten. The Belgian international – born to a Belgian father and a German mother – played for R. Charleroi SC and R. Standard de Liège in his native country before spells at Olympique de Marseille, Manchester City FC and Hamburger SV, from whom he joined Bayern in 2006.

• Van Buyten and Anderlecht's Mbo Mpenza were team-mates at Standard in the late 1990s.

• Anderlecht defender Jelle Van Damme and Bayern's Miroslav Klose were also briefly team-mates at Werder Bremen in 2005/06, when the Belgian international spent a brief loan spell with the Bundesliga club.

• Several other Anderlecht players have Bundesliga experience. Bart Goor spent three seasons at Hertha BSC Berlin, Ján Polak joined Anderlecht last summer after two seasons at 1. FC Nürnberg while German-born Turkish international Serhat Akın spent time on loan at 1. FC Köln last season.

• Serhat Akın and Bayern goalkeeper Kahn were both born in Karslruhe.

• Toni is suspended following his booking in Brussels while Bayern's Mark van Bommel remains within a booking of a match ban. The same goes for Anderlecht's Polak, Serhat Akın, Ahmed Hassan, Guillaume Gillet and Roland Juhász. Wasilewski is suspended following his dismissal last week.

• Anderlecht finished third in UEFA Cup Group G to reach the Round of 32, and then beat FC Girondins de Bordeaux 3-2 on aggregate to set up their tie with Bayern. Bayern won Group F and thrashed Aberdeen FC 7-3 on aggregate to book their place.

• The draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the UEFA Cup will be held in Nyon on 14 March at 14.00CET.
