José Antonio Camacho has resigned as coach of SL Benfica following his team's 2-2 home draw against UD Leiria, the Portuguese Liga's bottom club.
Reached limits
Camacho announced his intention to step down from the helm at the UEFA Cup contenders in the press conference after the game explaining that he felt he could not take the team any further. "I cannot do anything more to improve the team's performances," he said. Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira was at his side and confirmed that he has accepted the Spanish coach's request.
Second spell
The 52-year-old replaced Fernando Santos earlier this season and he leaves with Benfica second in the league although languishing 14 points adrift of FC Porto and struggling in their UEFA Cup Round of 16 tie after losing the home game against Getafe CF 2-1. Club stalwart Fernando Chalana will take charge for the second leg in Spain on Wednesday. Camacho arrived at Benfica for a first spell at the club in 2002 and won the Portuguese Cup the following season, before leaving to coach Real Madrid CF.
