Hamburg set up all-German meeting

Hamburger SV easily held FC Zürich at bay as the Bundesliga side eased through to the last 16 and an all-Germany tie with Bayer 04 Leverkusen following a comfortable aggregate victory.

Zürich chances
Trailing 3-1 after last week's first leg, Zürich began the match at the Hamburg Arena knowing they needed to score three times to keep their UEFA Cup ambitions alive, yet it never looked likely. Yassine Chikhaoui and Emra Tahirović had chances to reduce the deficit, but by then it was the second period and for much of the match it was the home side that looked the most likely scorers, and Zürich ended the match on the back foot as the hosts surged forward. A goal was not forthcoming but Huub Stevens will no doubt be content with progress.

Trochowski threat
Stevens was without the injured Rafael van der Vaart at the Arena Hamburg, though the talismanic playmaker's absence did not hinder the home side's early creativity. Piotr Trochowski scored the killer third goal in Switzerland and it was he that almost effectively ended the contest after just 16 minutes when he struck a long-range effort that Johnny Leoni was forced to palm away. Soon after Trochowski was again causing problems, lurking ominously to meet a fine Vincent Kompany cross, yet the Zürich back line snuffed out the danger.

Rost save
It was all Hamburg. José Paolo Guerrero came close to turning in Ivica Olić's fine ball while Collin Benjamin should have done better when he was found in space ten metres from goal. His weak effort was off target, however, and Zürich enjoyed a minor resurgence in the second half. Hamburg keeper Frank Rost was finally called upon eight minutes after the restart to keep out Dušan Djurić's effort and Tahirović blazed wide with 20 minutes left. Yet by then it was all largely academic as Hamburg eased through.
