Everton look to keep Brann at bay

After winning the first leg in Bergen 2-0, Everton FC will hope SK Brann coach Mons Ivar Mjelde endures another goalless trip to Liverpool in the UEFA Cup.

• Following a first-half stalemate, Leon Osman and Victor Anichebe struck to give the English side a substantial advantage to take to Goodison Park.

• Anichebe has scored just once in the Premier League this season yet his goal in Norway was the forward's fourth of this European campaign – and all have come in the last five minutes of matches. The 19-year-old, born in Nigeria but raised in Liverpool, earned praise from midfielder Lee Carsley: "He is a strong lad and is being used by the boss to come on when defenders are tiring. He has done so well in this competition, we almost expect him to score when he gets on the pitch."

• Everton's win at Brann set a club record of six successive victories in European competition.

• Brann have played five games against English opposition, drawing one and losing four. They slumped 11-0 on aggregate against Queen's Park Rangers FC in the 1976/77 UEFA Cup first round – with Stan Bowles scoring a hat-trick in both legs – then drew 1-1 at home and lost 3-0 away to Everton's neighbours Liverpool FC in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals.

• Geir Hasund, who scored the equaliser against Liverpool in Bergen, remains the only Brann player to have found the net against an English team. Brann have never scored on English soil.

• Brann coach Mjelde, then a forward, appeared in both legs of the tie against Liverpool.

• Mjelde also featured in 0-0 and 1-1 draws against Chelsea FC in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup second round during his time at FK Austria Wien.

• Brann, the 2007 Norwegian champions, have three away victories in Europe this season – in the first and second qualifying rounds and then the UEFA Cup first round proper.

• Everton have won two of their three UEFA Cup home matches this term, drawing the other.

• Two Brann players boast English top-flight experience. Midfielder Eirik Bakke, 30, played for Leeds United AFC between 1999 and 2006, also having time on loan at Aston Villa FC. Striker Azar Karadas, 26, spent the 2005/06 campaign on loan at Portsmouth FC.

• Brann reached the Round of 32 by finishing third in Group D. Everton came top of Group A and, along with FC Girondins de Bordeaux, were one of only two clubs to win all four group-stage games.

• The aggregate winners here will meet the victors of the tie between Rosenborg BK and ACF Fiorentina in the Round of 16 on 6 and 12/13 March, playing the second leg at home. Rosenborg trail the Italian side 1-0 after the first leg.

• There could potentially be an all-Norwegian tussle, with Brann taking on Rosenborg.

• Brann's Thorstein Helstad is within a booking of a match ban, as is Everton's Joseph Yobo.
