Simon Vukčević's joy at scoring both goals in Sporting Clube de Portugal's 2-0 UEFA Cup victory against FC Basel 1893 has been tempered by the news that he sustained a shoulder injury during last night's first leg which will keep him out for around three weeks.
No surgery
The 22-year-old Montenegrin international struck in the 8th and 58th minutes in Lisbon before being substituted in the 72nd after falling awkwardly. "Vukčević has injured his right shoulder and will need three weeks to recover," said Sporting doctor Gomes Pereira. "Sometimes we're able to easily pop the shoulder back into place but in this case it's not the first time he's done it so we weren't able to. Fortunately, he doesn't need surgery." Vukčević will miss next Thursday's second leg in Switzerland and the derby against SL Benfica on 2 March. The winners of the Sporting-Basel tie will meet either Bolton Wanderers FC or Club Atlético de Madrid in the last 16.
