Stanislav Cherchesov has extended his contract as coach of FC Spartak Moskva until December 2010 after leading the Premier-Liga side into the UEFA Cup Round of 32.
Gentlemen's agreement
The 44-year-old former Spartak, Soviet Union and Russia goalkeeper has settled on a new deal with the Moscow club, saying: "We agreed all the terms at the end of 2007. Our major shareholder offered me certain conditions and we shook hands on the matter. There were no difficulties during the signing of the new contract as we have sorted out all the details."
Second place
Cherchesov took charge of Spartak two games before the half-way point in the 2007 season and succeeded in leading the club to their third consecutive second-placed finish in the Russian top flight. His side failed to beat Celtic FC in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, losing out on penalties, but progressed through the UEFA Cup group stage to meet Olympique de Marseille in the Round of 32, whom they trail 3-0 from the first leg in France.
