Galatasaray AS are hoping history will not repeat itself as they take on FK Austria Wien in their final Group H game looking to avoid defeat to stand a chance of reaching the Round of 32.

• The teams met in the second round of the 1982/83 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, with the Austrian side impressively winning 4-2 in Istanbul before advancing despite a 1-0 home defeat in the second leg.

• Turkey coach Fatih Terim played in both legs of the tie for the Istanbul side, while Toni Polster scored twice for Austria in Turkey and Mirsad Sejdić did the same for Galatasaray. Austria beat the holders FC Barcelona in the next round to reach the semi-finals where they lost 5-3 on aggregate to Real Madrid CF.

• Karl-Heinz Feldkamp's Galatasaray are fourth in Group H having lost their opening games against FC Girondins de Bordeaux and Helsingborg before winning 3-0 at Panionios GSS.

• They can qualify for the Round of 32 as third-placed finishers with a win against Austria, but only if Panionios drop points in their final game at home to group winners Bordeaux.

• Galatasaray could also qualify with a draw if Panionios lose, due to their superior goal difference over the Greek club.

• If Galatasaray finish third, they would be drawn against the winners from one of the other groups in the Round of 32, playing the home leg first.

• Austria have had a miserable UEFA Cup campaign, losing against Bordeaux, Helsingborg and Panionios to sink to the foot of the section. The best Georg Zellhofer's side can do is finish fourth, and they will only do that if they beat Galatasaray by a four-goal margin.

• Should Austria go down again in Istanbul, they will have lost their last eight UEFA Cup group stage ties in succession, having also ended the 2006/07 campaign point-less.

• Born in Vienna but of Turkish descent, Austria midfielder Yüksel Sariyar has experience of Turkish football, having played for Gençlerbirligi SK in the 1999/00 season and Kocaelispor in 2003/04.

• He played alongside Galatasaray forward Ümit Karan in that season at Gençlerbirligi.

• Galatasaray have played 12 UEFA club competition games against Austrian sides (including their previous tie against Wednesday's opponents) winning five, drawing one and losing six. In five home games, they have won three and lost two.

• The 1982/83 tie was Austria's only meeting with Turkish opposition.

• Galatasaray defender Uğur Uçar is within a booking of a one-match suspension, as is Austria's Sariyar.

• The draw for the Round of 32 and Round of 16 will be held in Nyon on 21 December from 13.00CET.
